Sometimes confused with CCFC playing contemporary near namesake (also a CCFPA member in later years) Barry Hawkings ‘Corky’ went to Attleborough Park Avenue school in Nuneaton and became an apprentice with CCFC age 16 in 1948. In fact Coventry City was Corky’s only senior club and, though he played junior (City ‘A’) and reserve matches for CCFC, he never pulled on a first team shirt in Cup or League for the Bantams. Jim spoke to Ray’s widow and passed on the Association’s condolence on hearing that Nuneaton born Ray, also known in his playing days as ‘Corky’, had died aged 87.
